John Cox

John Cox is a trial lawyer with over twenty years experience. John started his career as a Deputy District Attorney where he prosecuted every type of case including homicides, sexual assaults and “three strikes” career criminal cases. For the next thirteen years, John worked for an international law firm where his practice included white collar criminal defense, internal investigations, environmental cases and general civil litigation.

As a litigator, John represents a variety of clients in federal and state courts as well as in arbitration. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal, and the states of California and Washington. John was recognized as a “Rising Star” in Northern California Super Lawyer magazine in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He has also been selected by his peers for inclusion in the Best Lawyers In America list from 2013 through the present. John holds an “AV Preeminent” peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell – the highest rating possible from that organization.

John defends individuals and corporations charged with, or under investigation for, crimes and/or regulatory violations. He has defended ship owners, marine terminal operators, oil refineries and corporations accused of environmental crimes. He has represented Responsible Parties and Qualified Individuals in pollution response matters. I have represented individuals and corporations in the securities industry for civil and regulatory matters before the SEC and FINRA. He has also represented individuals and corporations in criminal OSHA proceedings and other criminal or regulatory investigations involving the FBI, EPA, United States Coast Guard, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and state agencies up the west coast.

John’s maritime practice includes litigation of all traditional maritime claims, including personal injury, cargo loss and damage, and vessel casualties such as collisions and oil spills. He has been the primary on-scene attorney in numerous pollution incidents. John has also conducted multiple internal investigations of alleged MARPOL violations and other criminal environmental matters on behalf of vessel interests.

In general civil litigation, John has served as plaintiff’s counsel or defense counsel for various corporations and individuals in cases ranging from breach of contract, negligence and mass torts. John is currently prosecuting thousands of cases against a Northern California electrical utility in connection with the wine country fires in 2017.
